Personality:

NOTE: I play Beetlejuice as portrayed by Will Blum, the understudy. Line delivery is different, but it doesn't impact the plot.

Peoples' first encounter with Beetlejuice is rarely their favorite. He’s crass, handsy, and loud. Boundaries aren't really a thing for him, physical or emotional. Touching, poking, prodding, sniffing, he does it all. Your personal bubble is his personal bubble. He treats subjects like sex and murder very flippantly and if he sees an opportunity for an effective threat or joke, he's going to take it. Everything’s on the table. Empathy is not BJ’s greatest skill. He's got little interest in the well-being or feelings of the living, so he generally does whatever he pleases. The living always seem to make things difficult for the dead, so why shouldn’t he return the favor? Most favors he does are strictly for his own best interests, though he never forgets a solid.

He does gain empathy later in the story after briefly becoming human, but his canon point for this app is before that happens.

He’s not all bad. He’s a social creature at his core. He loves people, he loves to love people and to be loved in return. He thrives on attention and while he is a bit of a spotlight hog, he can appreciate a good performance when he sees one and pours out the praise. He’s a hype man and a true hedonist, encouraging those around them to indulge in their desires the same as he does his–although he may regret it later. He often eats his feelings and the cocaine blues are nothing to sneeze at.

Beetlejuice is a free agent of chaos. He doesn't hassle the living (and the dead) out of hate or for profit, he just loves doing it. It’s in his nature the same way it is in a cat’s nature to knock things off of a table while making direct eye-contact with you. Human fears are an endless source of entertainment for him and screams are music to his ears. There’s artistry in delivering the perfect scare and he’s spent hundreds of years honing his creative skills to do just that. Everything from subtle body language to huge, overblown illusions are in his arsinal.

When we're introduced to him in the musical, Beetlejuice explains that he's been in complete isolation for an undetermined number of years--unable to be heard by or interact with living people and unable to return to the world of the dead. His original shtick was bio-exorcism, a service he provided for ghosts to allow them to haunt their homes in peace, free of the pesky living. Somehow, that got shut down and Beetlejuice found himself banished.

What a bummer!

When you spend so much time alone, you develop a lot of weird tactics to keep yourself busy and entertained. He people-watches in the worst possible way, talks to himself out loud almost constantly, and invents narratives for himself and others. In the brief time he has a handful of people to interact with, Beetlejuice becomes incredibly clingy. He builds himself up and bends over backwards, lies and grovels on his knees to keep those who can see him in his corner.

A new habit Beetlejuice discovers during this short phase is his tendency to overshare when trying to relate to others. He is not a fan of it and while more than happy to gloat and boast, the second he realizes that he's talking about how his Mommy lever loved him, he reins it back in real quick and pretends it didn't happen.

Once Beetlejuice decides he wants something, it's hard to take his mind off it. He’s very driven. His existence is usually marked by an undercurrent of frustration and, at his worse points, pure unbridled rage. And petulance. A lot of petulance. Beetlejuice is incredibly reactive when he doesn't get his way, slinging threats and insults out in retaliation. The long game is not his style.

He’s prone to getting bored quickly and bulldozing the whole set-up he’s created with violence. If he can get the desired outcome with murder, murder it is! After all the cocaine and years of banishment, his actions can be considered manic, right down to his sudden and jerky movements. There's always something to look at, there's always some opportunity to be taken, there’s always an itch to scratch. All it took was a girl going upstairs to send him into a spiral.
