🦋 IC Information

Character Name: Lawrence Beetlejuice (earlier scripts give him the last name Shoggoth but it's not specified in the musical)
Age: Claims to have been around for millenia, probably closer to 600.
Canon: Beetlejuice the Musical the Musical the Musical
Canon Point: During the finale where Juno grabs him and throws him out of the house to the sandworms.
Character History: Wiki
Canon Abilities: Possession, grand illusions, body modification/shapeshifting, producing flames, breaking the fourth wall (feel free to nerf this), cloning himself (clones have limited intelligence), altering/corruption of a space he haunts.
Inventory: Unclear, he's able to manifest a number of props from within his jacket and pockets. Examples: microphone, banjolele, cocaine, handheld pointer, newspaper.

🦋 Personality

Option 1: Answer the following questions. Elaborate on the answer, especially your characters thoughts and feelings surrounding the answer. For Canon Characters, you can choose four questions. Keep the word count to 150-400 per question.

  1. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

  2. Throughout the whole musical, Beetlejuice wishes to be free from his obscurity. He is trapped in the land of the living, yet cannot interact with it or be seen. He does become visible later in the story, but it's still not enough because while he is visible, he is trapped in a house by sandworms/ghost rules. His goal then shifts to becoming human (I'll be boring, just like you!) so he can leave and experience the world. He's been watching the world for such a long time and yearns to be part of it. During the finale, he gets his wish to become human, although it only lasts for a few moments. After the fact, he decides he's happy being dead because being alive is TOO MUCH. Too many emotions all at once. Not for him.

At his pull point, he'd wish for his new friend (???) to escape from Juno or to be returned so he can face off with her properly. Part of him is human still.

  3. What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?

  4. The siren could be reading the damn phone book and he'd still swim out to her without a second thought.

A real actual mermaid? Hot!!! Beetlejuice has only known demons and ghosts throughout his long life and is not immune to being awestruck by new things. He knows the stories about mermaids drowning people, but he's different okay? She won't drown him, she definitely wants to bone. Any song will do, really. Sing him something sultry from the 50's and get him howling like that Tex Avery wolf.

He is very easily fooled by displays of affection and flirtation. This happens to him multiple times throughout the play and he never learns from it. The man is terminally horny. He claims to be suspicious of things that seem too good to be true, but he is ready to be convinced. A song that would have him jumping over board is One Way Or Another by Blondie.

  5. What mythological creature would your character most like to be? Which do they identify with? Which would they dread being?

  6. Beetlejuice would choose to be something impressive and powerful like a dragon--something to turn the heads of everyone in the room. Stealing maidens and burning villages to the ground both sound like a good time to Beetlejuice. There's also an oldness to dragons that appeals to him. Dragons are in every human culture and command respect and fear. A many hundred year old demon can relate. He wants to be woven into fairy tales the way dragons have been. He wants to be the new boogeyman.

The creature he would want to be the least is a ghoul. Because he kind of already is one and Beetlejuice, though bombastic and showy, deeply dislikes himself. The nature of his being is a little up in the air as he both calls himself a demon and a ghost and those things aren't very well defined in the musical. He wouldn't put it past himself to sink to a level of depravity where he was digging up and eating corpses. It's Tuesday. He's got nothing going on.

  7. If there's one person your character would follow to another realm, who would it be and why? If there's no one, state that and explain why.

  8. Considering Lydia has already jumped into Hell to escape from him once and lived to tell the tale, he'd probably follow her because the kid knows what she's doing. He admires her thirst for revenge and her natural talent for scaring the living and wouldn't be surprised to find out that she shines in other ways. He's also spent the most time with her out of anyone else in the musical besides his mom and considers them best friends.

He relates to her--she hates her dad, he hates his mom. They're practically the same person! Wow! She also totally outsmarted him at his own game and managed to kill him to boot so he has nothing but mad respect for the little lady. It's because of her that he got a taste of humanity. He's willing to face off with his mother to protect her. Wherever she leads, he'll follow with bells on.

CANON: Beetlejuice the Musical the Musical the Musical
CANON POINT: From the finale where Juno throws him out of the house, presumably to the sandworms.
BACKGROUND: Wiki

SUITABILITY:
I think Beetlejuice, who is entirely selfish up until the 11th hour, would do to learn some of the friendship values that are so prevalent in Pokemon. Learning to make real, actual friends and then retaining those friends would set him on the course to better behavior. MAKE THAT MAN EXPERIENCE EMPATHY!!! In the musical, right before his pull point, he gets to be alive for like five minutes. Maybe less. During those few minutes he goes on a roller coaster ride of emotions and later, once he's dead again, he says he admires the living for dealing with that all day every day. As a demon, it's implied he didn't feel emotions normally or at all. Debatable, since he's shown feeling both lonely and angry. But guess what!! HE'S NOT A GHOST-TYPE so he is ALIVE in the Bay! I did have him on the first TDM and again on the third, so he's been alive for a little while but spent most of that lost and wild in the forest. So he's still got to travel that Becoming a Member of Society arc.

He would be reluctant to join any kind of team at first because he sees himself as a one man show, but once he sees the benefits of working together with all kinds of different Pokemon, he'd be willing to play along. At least, as long as it serves him. He's got no problem lying, cheating, and stealing. He hasn't really faced consiquences before, so that will be another learning curve. The nature of Pokemon battles will appeal to him--a good way to get all his destructive energy out. His battle style would be all about intimidation and manipulation (Scary Face and Baby Doll eyes) and cheap shots until he evolves and can pack more of a punch. He's a big dog in a little dog body. Or weasel body.

He's going to hate being a weird weasel with no way to change back, but finding out that he has the ability to evolve and get bigger and stronger (and cooler) will give him a solid goal to work toward. Using Pokemon abilities won't be much different than using his demonic ghost powers for him. However, it's going to take a while for him to learn about type advantage because he has no way of knowing which Pokemon does what.

QUESTIONNAIRE:

Your character is on an exploration quest when they find an injured Pokemon in need of help. This Pokemon appears to be in distress and is quite dangerous, posing a risk to your character even if they mean well, and putting your quest mission at risk. What do they do? What are some possibilities of how they work with teammates to address this, or do they go at it alone?

  • Who WOULDN'T want a big dangerous Pokemon in their debt? Beetlejuice would have to be sure he's actually able to assist before he starts making deals, because while he has no problem lying, he doesn't want a bigger, more dangerous Pokemon to catch wise and retaliate. He is but a weasel. BJ would more than likely try to pull this if he's alone as to isolate the other Pokemon and manipulate them. If he's with a group he doesn't think he can win over with his Very Good and Smart Idea, he'll actually lean the other way and suggest that the Pokemon is big enough to take care of themself and that they have something important to do. The goal, guys! The goal!

  • Your character's worst enemy has recently appeared in game, and has joined the guild your character is part of. They both want to tackle the same quest, and your character's enemy suggests that they work together as a team to accomplish this goal. How does your character respond to this?

  • BJ's current worst enemy is his MOM. If Juno appeared and joined his guild, Beetlejuice would simply throw himself out the nearest window. His pull point is from when she dupes him with kindness so she can grab him and throw him to the sandworms because he's protecting someone she's trying to drag to Hell. He feels strongly about this.

However, Beetlejuice's word is probably not worth much to the Pokemon of Bottlecap Bay, so any smear campaign he'd start against her would probably fall apart. If it's Juno suggesting they work together, Beetlejuice would probably fall for it. He wants her to like him so, so badly. He'd have more experience as a Pokemon than her, so he'd actually be able to teach her something. See, ma! He's not a TOTAL screw-up!

Alternatively, depending on how much development he's gotten and if he's found himself a circle of friends, he might dig his heels in and become a huge pain in the ass. If she hates him so bad, he'll give her a REASON. Even at the cost of the goal. He has no problem making this all about him.

  • The leader of your character's guild has just approached your character with an offer: they will provide your character with extra supplies, reputation points, and help them with any of their current struggles. In exchange, they ask for your character to do a favor for them that may harm the other guilds, and will not specify what the favor is in advance. It sounds shady, but it's the deal of a lifetime in your character's path to get back home, and refusing it may cause strife for your character within their current guild. What do they think of this offer? What do they ultimately decide to do?

  • Scoring extra goodies AND screwing over some chumps in the process? Count him in! He wants out of this place and he'll do whatever it takes to get there! No thought given to this, he just does it. Sucks to suck!

If he's got a friend in that guild though, he might try to scheme up a double-cross. He AND his friend win that way! He doesn't seem to anticipate any punishment he'll receive from this. That's a problem for future Beetlejuice.

  • Due to shortages on supplies, the city is facing issues deciding where to cut corners during this rough time. Somehow, the responsibility has fallen on your character's shoulders, and they have to make a decision. If they send out an extra team of Pokemon, they will be able to gather more food, and through that, save the lives of dozens of starving Pokemon that were in dire need of nutrition. However, the only Pokemon available to scout for food are those working at the pokeclinic, and sending them out would mean certain death for at least two ill patients. What does your character decide to do? How do they feel about this choice, and how would they deal with the pushback that comes from either side?

  • Here is where it gets interesting. Up until just a few moments before his pull point, he never knew what it meant to be alive. And he's been alive the whole time he's been in this world. He likes being alive, even if he's a stupid weasel. So there's some empathy deep in his heart. The things that would have to have fallen into place to end up with BEETLEJUICE being the one to make the call would guarantee that he's done some growing. He's still very new to it though, so he would go for sending the Pokemon out to scout UNLESS one of the Pokemon guaranteed to die was a friend. Then he'd stick by them. He doesn't have a lot of friends, he's gotta hang onto them. It's a childish mentality, but it is what it is.

Canon: Beetlejuice: The Musical The Musical The Musical
Canon Point: Directly after the "Say My Name" musical number.

    Character Information: Wiki

    Personality:

NOTE: I play Beetlejuice as portrayed by Will Blum, the understudy. Line delivery is different, but it doesn't impact the plot.

Peoples' first encounter with Beetlejuice is rarely their favorite. He’s crass, handsy, and loud. Boundaries aren't really a thing for him, physical or emotional. Touching, poking, prodding, sniffing, he does it all. Your personal bubble is his personal bubble. He treats subjects like sex and murder very flippantly and if he sees an opportunity for an effective threat or joke, he's going to take it. Everything’s on the table. Empathy is not BJ’s greatest skill. He's got little interest in the well-being or feelings of the living, so he generally does whatever he pleases. The living always seem to make things difficult for the dead, so why shouldn’t he return the favor? Most favors he does are strictly for his own best interests, though he never forgets a solid.

He does gain empathy later in the story after briefly becoming human, but his canon point for this app is before that happens.

He’s not all bad. He’s a social creature at his core. He loves people, he loves to love people and to be loved in return. He thrives on attention and while he is a bit of a spotlight hog, he can appreciate a good performance when he sees one and pours out the praise. He’s a hype man and a true hedonist, encouraging those around them to indulge in their desires the same as he does his–although he may regret it later. He often eats his feelings and the cocaine blues are nothing to sneeze at.

Beetlejuice is a free agent of chaos. He doesn't hassle the living (and the dead) out of hate or for profit, he just loves doing it. It’s in his nature the same way it is in a cat’s nature to knock things off of a table while making direct eye-contact with you. Human fears are an endless source of entertainment for him and screams are music to his ears. There’s artistry in delivering the perfect scare and he’s spent hundreds of years honing his creative skills to do just that. Everything from subtle body language to huge, overblown illusions are in his arsinal.

When we're introduced to him in the musical, Beetlejuice explains that he's been in complete isolation for an undetermined number of years--unable to be heard by or interact with living people and unable to return to the world of the dead. His original shtick was bio-exorcism, a service he provided for ghosts to allow them to haunt their homes in peace, free of the pesky living. Somehow, that got shut down and Beetlejuice found himself banished.

    What a bummer!

When you spend so much time alone, you develop a lot of weird tactics to keep yourself busy and entertained. He people-watches in the worst possible way, talks to himself out loud almost constantly, and invents narratives for himself and others. In the brief time he has a handful of people to interact with, Beetlejuice becomes incredibly clingy. He builds himself up and bends over backwards, lies and grovels on his knees to keep those who can see him in his corner.

A new habit Beetlejuice discovers during this short phase is his tendency to overshare when trying to relate to others. He is not a fan of it and while more than happy to gloat and boast, the second he realizes that he's talking about how his Mommy lever loved him, he reins it back in real quick and pretends it didn't happen.

Once Beetlejuice decides he wants something, it's hard to take his mind off it. He’s very driven. His existence is usually marked by an undercurrent of frustration and, at his worse points, pure unbridled rage. And petulance. A lot of petulance. Beetlejuice is incredibly reactive when he doesn't get his way, slinging threats and insults out in retaliation. The long game is not his style.

He’s prone to getting bored quickly and bulldozing the whole set-up he’s created with violence. If he can get the desired outcome with murder, murder it is! After all the cocaine and years of banishment, his actions can be considered manic, right down to his sudden and jerky movements. There's always something to look at, there's always some opportunity to be taken, there’s always an itch to scratch. All it took was a girl going upstairs to send him into a spiral.

    Personality:

NOTE: I play Beetlejuice as portrayed by Will Blum. Most of the lines are the same, but the delivery is different.

Peoples' first encounter with Beetlejuice is rarely their favorite. Being a demon, he's got little interest in the well-being or feelings of the living, so he generally does whatever he pleases. He sees them as both subjects to terrorize but also a huge burden because the living always seem to make things difficult for the dead. Boundaries aren't really a thing for Beetlejuice, physical or emotional. Touching, poking, prodding, sniffing, he does it all. It's in your best interests to keep your fingers away from his mouth. He treats the subjects of sex, death, drugs, and murder very flippantly due to both his age and status and if he sees an opportunity for an effective threat, pun or a gag, he's going to take it. As a demon, it's established he's never been alive in the first place, so empathy is not his highest stat.

Beetlejuice is a free agent of chaos. He doesn't hassle the living out of hate or for revenge, he just loves doing it. Human fears are fascinating to him and he finds scream downright musical. He loves causing a scene. He loves attention. He still counts negative attention as attention and it becomes evident very quickly with how far he'll go to get a rise out of someone.

Emotionally, he's a little stunted. He's very reactive when he doesn't get his way, has shit object permanence, and extreme separation anxiety. As a dead person, feelings don't really work the same way as they do for the living. His existence is usually marked by an undercurrent of frustration and, at his worse points, pure unbridled rage. And petulance. A lot of petulance.

When we're introduced to him in the musical, he explains that he's been in complete isolation on Earth for an undetermined number of years--unable to be heard by or interact with living people. Scaring the living and teaching others how to do so used to be his main passion and perhaps that was what got him banished in the first place. Ghosts are supposed to go to the Netherworld, not stick around on earth. When you spend so much time alone, you develop a lot of weird tactics to keep yourself busy and entertained. He people-watches in the worst possible way, talks to himself out loud almost constantly, and takes little care of his physical appearance. In the brief time he has a handful of people to interact with, Beetlejuice is all over the place. He's the dog that finally caught the car that he's been chasing. He wants to be best friends and he also wants to bang. He sells himself as the perfect man for the job while also groveling on his knees.

A new habit Beetlejuice has discovered upon finally having people to talk to again is his tendency to overshare about his past troubles. He is not a fan of it and while more than happy to gloat and boast, the second he realizes that he's talking about how his Mommy lever loved him, he reins it back in real quick and pretends it didn't happen.

He's very creative when it comes to his illusions and a fairly accomplished schemer. Once Beetlejuice decides he wants something, it's hard to take his mind off it. The long game is not his style. Beetlejuice is prone to getting bored quickly and bulldozing the whole situation with raw power rather than finesse or skill. He's very manic, right down to his sudden and jerky movements. There's always something to look at, there's always some opportunity to be taken. It clashes loudly with the otherwise flamboyant and cool-cat persona he puts on.

Beetlejuice is very lively for a dead guy.

[A shiny Haunter drifts into frame holding a book. It's wearing a little fez and looking very smart. It hands BJ the book. He flips it open until he finds the page he's looking for.]

Ah, yes. Ghost Pokemon. Possibly the most mysterious of all Pokemon, for you see they are ghosts. A ghost is, if you are unfamiliar, the remnant of a dead person. Or dead Pokemon in this case. Gastly hatch from eggs, so we must ask...were they another Pokemon in a previous life? Or are they simply...born dead. That would be, how they say, pretty fucked up.

Sir! Sir, you can't sit in those, those are for display only.

[Beetlejuice snaps the book shut and whips around to spot the angry furniture store clerk approaching him.]

Alas, we must ponder until next time...SCATTER, BOYS!

Suitability: I think throwing Beetlejuice into a world where he isn't at the top of the food chain would be really interesting! There's new magic to discover, new people to see, and plenty of opportunities to spread chaos. I think he would be interested in the on-going fight for the Singularity because power struggles are a great breeding ground for paranoia and fear. However, if it starts looking like he might lose his new playground, he could possibly be spurred into action. Or maybe he'll make a friend or two--stranger has happened!

    Powers:

Cursed State- Depending on the canon point/situation in-game, Beetlejuice may or may not be visible. When he hasn't been summoned, he is invisible to the living (save for those pre-disposed to seeing ghosts) and cannot affect the physical world. When a living person says his name three times in a row, he is brought back into the physical world. He is summoned directly to them and must remain within the house/building where he's been called. Beetlejuice cannot speak his own name and often has trouble spelling it.

Shapeshifting- Beetlejuice can easily alter his body's appearance. He favors his human shape the most but when a situation calls for a visual aid or a costume change, he's ready.

Prestidigitation- He can produce a whole array of (annoying) illusions, props, sounds, and smells.

Possession- When summoned, he is able to physically manipulate those around him. When un-summoned, he can only control other ghosts.

Influence- He is able to corrupt the the world around him to suit his tastes. This only applies to the building in which he is summoned.

Levitation- He can float. (GAME SPECIFIC- I love the idea of him not being able to cross running water of any kind with this method. Just flat-out stops working and dunks his ass. I'm also happy to accept any other nerf!)

Immaterial- He can pass through people and solid objects at will.

    PERSONALITY QUESTIONS

Describe an important event in your character's life and how it impacted them.

Being banished has made a big difference for Beetlejuice. We don't get to know exactly how it went down or why, but I suspect it had a lot to do with his Bio-Exorcist gig. Ghosts are supposed to go to the Netherworld after they die, not remain among the living. Beetlejuice was going to ghosts' homes and chasing away the living people per the ghosts requests. He thrived on the chaos and attention.

Then, Beetlejuice was both banished from the world of the dead and trapped in obscurity among the living--specifically in an old Victorian house for years and years with no one to talk to. It was the ultimate time-out. It was a huge blow to his self-esteem and if quarantine has taught us anything, loneliness can make you pretty weird. He's invented a bunch of methods of entertaining himself when watching whoever lives in his house at the time isn't enough, what social skills he previously had have all but deteriorated, and he talks to himself. Beetlejuice has become clingy, jealous, and absolutely desperate for socialization of any kind. Shame? He doesn't know her.

Does your character have a moral code, or other set of standards they try to live by?

He doesn't have much of a moral compass, but if you do him a solid he won't soon forget it.

What quality or qualities do they admire most?

A good sense of what makes something scary! Scaring people means understanding what makes them tick. You wouldn't take him for someone versed in psycho-mo-logy but he's sharper than he looks. Visually, Beetlejuice appreciates all kinds of bodies and sees something attractive in everyone. A nice ass doesn't hurt though. He admires guts! If you talk back to this demon he will straighten up and pay attention. He's been around for a long time so if you show him something he hasn't seen before you'll earn his respect quickly.

Do they have a part of themselves they dislike? Beetlejuice is not terribly fond of how overshare-y he's become in isolation and has to rein himself back in when personal details slip out. He also may be a little embarrassed of his habit of eating his feelings. Is he going to stop any time soon? No, but he will feel sorry for himself about it.

What is their sign, and why? The Wheel of Fortune - Beetlejuice is entirely self-serving. He wants all the sex, drugs, and fun he can get and will go to extreme lengths to get it. He is, however, not terribly interested in money. "I do it for the love of it. Money? Ah, who gives a shit!" - The Whole Being Dead Thing Pt. 2
